As far as I am concerned, my relationship with clients is far more important than what I charge. A delighted client is worth far more to me than getting a few extra pounds in fees. I always strive to give quality and value and work best with clients who appreciate that.
The costs of garden designs vary hugely. Those that are primarily planting plans with little change of layout can cost as little as a few hundred pounds for a small suburban garden. Others can range upwards to, for example, many thousands for the substantial remodelling, construction and landscaping for a country houses with several acres of grounds. No two jobs are the same!
It is, though, possible to create beautiful spaces that meet your functional requirements without spending huge amounts. I can advise on the materials and plants that best deliver what you want, even if you have to make some compromises to meet your budget. I spend many hours researching what can best meet my clients’ needs. This is very important to me.
In terms of costs, I will give you a quote for a garden design based on the specification we agree which will include the steps to be undertaken, the milestones for decisions and an estimated timetable. Depending on the work envisaged, a price can alternatively be agreed as a percentage of the overall cost of the project on a similar basis to how architects charge.
In terms of costs for any gardening undertaken, a recent survey* of the Oxford market found that few professional gardeners charge less than £30 per hour. Most charge more and often quote on the basis of the job rather than how long it will take. You can find people who are cheaper but, unless you are lucky, their skills are likely to be limited to basic maintenance and clearance. According to my clients, my rates as a gardener are very reasonable, especially as I bring immense knowledge of gardening as well as the flair and skills of a highly qualified designer.
